Hate sunburn? Yep, me too...
Today, I thought I would write a post about Sunburn.. possibly the most annoying thing about summer. Especially since, I was fortunate enough to get a nice and painful sunburn yesterday (I live in the UK... what is this?!). So, I have been looking up lots of remedies and ways of recuperating and recovering my skin.
Ouch! |
The remedy of choice for most people seems to be aloe vera...
I definitely feel that if a remedy can be as natural as possible and it works, then it is the best option. I also believe in layering of products and layering of moisture... so using multiple methods/products.
And now for the How To...
1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Pile on the lotions and after sun, if they contain aloe vera good, if not add it as an extra step. Make sure to let your lotions sink in and wait an hour or so before re-applying or applying a different product. Make sure to avoid lotions which contain alcohol or benzocaine.
2. Shower Time. Taking cool and ice showers feels soothing and calming against a hot, angry sunburn and can decrease any inflammation/swelling. The Huffington Post says that hot showers do not draw out the heat, so don't put yourself through it!
3. Loosey Goosey. If your sunburn is painful, as I'm pretty sure it is, wear loose clothes so that your clothes do not apply pressure to the painful burns. Also, try and cover up a little more so as to avoid any more sun exposure!
4. Don't Peel, Don't Pick. If your skin starts peeling (I'm sorry, that sucks), leave it alone, let the skin fall off on its own. Continue with your lotions etc, but let your skin do its own thing, if you peel or pick at it, it might hurt as you do so and cause further peeling.
5. Drink it. Hydration comes from the inside as well as the outside, and we have many many layers of skin, which take a long time to be (if ever) affected by topical applications. Hydrating from both sides will help the body heal and recuperate.
And of course, it goes without saying but, avoid the sun, slather yourself in SPF if you do have to venture into the sun, wear hats and make sure you know if it is a serious burn and when it is time to visit the doctor!

Disclaimer: I am not a skin care professional or dermatologist etc, I am just speaking from experience, remedies which I have tried and tested and have looked up on the internet, to see what other people suggest. I would not suggest anything which I believe would be painful or harmful and only suggest things I truly believe would be beneficial and work.
